Presentation on “Using MLPerf for Procurement at NREL”

  • By Matt Selensky and Olivia Hull
  • MLC Science WG - 2025/07/09 07:56 PDT - Recording
  • Presentation mlperf_scienceWG_9Jul25.pptx
  • Matt Sinclair had questions for the NREL folks:
  • How do/does your benchmark process compare to NERSC-10 (LLNL Benchmark) and OLCF-6 (ORNL Benchmark)?
  • How do ML+HPC/ML+Science workloads factor into the benchmark suites you are developing?
  • Do you all have needs for benchmarking on potential future systems before they exist? How do you "prototype" optimizations for these future systems?
  • Gregor von Laszewski asked Matt Sinclair: can you write paragraph NERSC-10 and OLCF-6 and send to me
  • The NREL MLPerf benchmark is called the ESIF-HPC-4 benchmark https://github.com/NREL/ESIFHPC4/tree/main
  • Gregor asked “did you have a modification or add on to ESIF-HPC-4 between the call and the interaction with vendors due to rapid evolving hardware”
  • Matt Sinclair noted to Tom Gibbs that “I thought you were going to say AI/ML has changed at least 3 times during Matt's talk”
  • David Kanter commented on term “Supersonic arrow”: As a former archer, that’s quite intriguing
  • Victor Lu noted Benchmarking & profiling · CUDA.jl - Julia seems to be able genericize benchmarks by focusing on scientific and GPU "kernel" level benchmarks.
  • Tom Gibbs noted that: Perhaps a good check is that MLPERF stresses system features common to AI/ML that are different from ModSim (Modeling and Simulation)

Discussion of White Papers

  • Gregor noted that heI would like that people go through
  • https://github.com/mlcommons-science/benchmark/blob/main/source/benchmark-entry-comment-gregor.yaml and complete the descriptions. Some of which have been gathered from various people, but the descriptions may not be complete or accurate yet.
  • This includes some from Nahn and Geoffrey. Maybe we should have another meeting with the two of them or just do this offline?
  • Matt Sinclair replied that “@Gregor: it doesn't look like that list is something that needs my direct feedback, but let me know if I'm missing something”
