Sebastian Lobentanzer https://www.linkedin.com/in/slobentanzer/ is Head of Computational Biology at the German Center for Diabetes Research (Deutsches Zentrum für Diabetesforschung, DZD)
The MLC Science WG meeting on November 26, 2025, covered the following key points:
New Member: Sebastian Lobentanzer from Helmholz was introduced, expressing interest in automating the scientific process with agentic systems and contributing to carpentries.
Carpentry Paper Status: The paper is frozen and awaiting Fermilab's approval. Gary Mazzaferro requested to be acknowledged instead of listed as an author due to a conflict of interest, which was accepted. The paper has been proofread, with a caution against using external AI tools for review.
Next Steps for the Paper: Discussions centered on conference submission, with Perk (Minneapolis in July) suggested as a suitable venue.
Future Work: The group emphasized developing tutorials or curriculum, possibly in the style of Software Carpentry, to disseminate the paper's findings.
Broadening Scope: Gary Mazzaferro proposed a broader framework for assessing AI data center projects, including economic performance, feasibility, and integrating concerns from various stakeholders across the life cycle, which the group found ambitious but timely.
Energy Benchmarking: The importance of energy usage and cost in benchmarking was highlighted, with a suggestion for a separate technical paper on this topic, led by Armstrong Foundjem, who needs to first review the existing "ML Perf Power" paper.
Action Items: Include sharing the conference link for a workshop in Korea, proofreading the paper by gyuri papay, contacting Fermilab about the approval process, and you sending an email to Sebastian Lobentanzer about giving a talk
Discussion
Gregg Barrett asked Sebastian: I would be interested in the pipeline / toolsets you are using Sebastian. Drop me a note. gregg.barrett@cirrusai.net
Geoffrey: Sebastian. Could you give a presentation on your use of agentic AI
Gregg Barrett noted for Carpentry paper
I have been through it twice Juri. Made some minor edits. It should be near completion. There might be more opportunity to check links and references
gyuri papay; Thank you Gregg.
Gregg Barrett with Christine’s thumbs up: I was thinking Carpentry "tools" for benchmarking.
